We have our Winner! Thanks again for all of you artists and your entries - it was a close race and there's a good chance I'll end up doing more than one of these designs. but first up, I get to do Brittney Lee's - It will likely be a few months before I'll have it ready, due in part to the fact that the technical challenges of this piece will be very large. But they should be interesting to work out - I'm debating right now whether or not I want to try to light her internally or externally with UV lights pointed at phosphorescent red\orange clay. Externally gives me a more even\smooth spread of the glow, while internally lighting gives me a more vibrant\accurate color of glow, though I'll have hot spots where the leds are seated. Hmm.

Since lava glows from within, I think you would get a more convincing result with internal lighting, but this one is going to be quite the challenge, isn't it? Knowing you as I do (mom speaking here) I can only hope that this project brings you more enjoyment than frustration... I know there will be both along the way, but the fun of it needs to be dominant, or it just isn't worth it! Oh wait, this is my son, Jon, right? The one who loves the drama of life! What am I thinking? Project on, my son. I'll be listening for those exquisite groans of dismay at your moments of frustration traveling from your lips in California all the way to my ever-loving heart in Georgia ;-) But seriously, be sure to post your progress with lots of pictures & comments from start to finish for us all, okay? We will all be following your work with great interest & it will be fun to watch the mechanisms of the process as it unfolds in your mind and at your hands! (& your brother, Jim's hands, too, I would guess...) Love ya!
I think your work is truly awesome Jonathan! Great variety as well! It's also very nice to see how you keep pushing your work. Michel
Jonathon this looks amazing!
This is not my art, it's Brittney Lee's actually. That's why it's so awesome. It was simply chosen from a voting contest to be the design for my next sculpture.
